Mapping the Social and physical Vulnerability of Senegal

Senegal has a dangerous history of highly uncertain climatic conditions, varying between cycles of drought to eras of frequent and severe flooding. Over the next decade, the frequency of such extreme events is expected to increase.

Cloud to Street created a country-wide socio-physical risk map using its remote flood mapping technology, machine learning, and a large scale quantitative social vulnerability assessment based on raw national census data. This approach is far faster and more responsive than traditional flood mapping, at only a fraction of the cost. The assessment revealed approximately, 5 million people across the country living in communities socially vulnerable to flooding, and a 5,596 km2 flood risk zone (amongst areas included in the analysis).
